Why so many characters sound the same
Chinese has only ~400 distinct syllables (with tones) but thousands of characters. That means many characters must share the same sound.
In practice, compound words and sentence context make ambiguity a non-issue — just like you never confuse "bank" (river) with "bank" (money) in English.
