The story behind the character

The traditional 這 is 辶 (walking) plus 言 (speech). It originally meant to go up and greet someone. To welcome. Xu Shen wrote 这, 迎也. Only later did it turn into "this." So the "this" in "this one" started out as "walking up to welcome."
