The story behind the character
过
過 is 辶, a foot on the move, with 咼 on the right giving the sound. Xu Shen wrote 過, 度也: to pass through, to measure across. The simplified 过 threw out 咼 and dropped in 寸, a hand. Either way the meaning is as plain as walking: keep going and you will be past it. 过马路, 吃过, 过去了. Movement plus time.
