The story behind the character
件
件 is 亻 (person) beside 牛, an ox. Xu Shen's gloss is 分也, to divide, and his reasoning is that an ox is a big animal, so an ox is a thing you can cut up. From a portion you can split off, the character slid into being the counting word for items and matters. One cut of the ox, one 件.
