About this word

介 means "to lie between", a sense it still carries in 媒介 (medium), and 绍 survives almost nowhere else in modern Chinese. Together they describe standing between two parties and making a connection, which is what an introduction does. The word covers people and things alike: 介绍一下, 这是我的朋友, or 我给你介绍一本书, "let me recommend a book". 介绍对象 means being set up on a date.

The story behind the character

介

介 is a person with strokes running down both sides. In the oldest writing it looks like a body in armor, plates strapped on left and right. Armor is a shell that stands between you and a blow, so 介 came to mean standing in between. Xu Shen read it as 介, 画也, a line drawn to divide things. In 介绍, 介 is the go-between who connects two people.

绍

绍 is 糸, a silk thread, with 召 on the right for the sound. Xu Shen wrote 绍, 继也, "to continue." A thread you keep spinning, one strand joined onto the next. Put it with 介 and you get 介绍: somebody stands in the middle and joins two strangers together, the way you join two threads.
