The story behind the character
累
累 is 糸, thread, under a worn-down 畾, which was three 田 stacked up. The older character 纍 meant to pile up, to bind together, rope coiling higher and higher. Xu Shen wrote 纍, 綴得理也, to string things in order. Tiredness came later, from one more thing piled on. The character has always been about accumulation.
