About this word
时 is a moment or a season, 间 is the gap between things. Together they name what passes between moments: duration, the amount of it you have. The contrast worth learning is with 时候, which marks a point rather than a span. 你有时间吗 asks whether you have spare time. 你什么时候来 asks when you are coming. One English word, two Chinese ones, and mixing them up is a standard beginner error.
The story behind the character
时
The traditional 時 is 日 (sun) plus 寺 (sound). No clocks back then, so you read the sun to tell the time. That's why 时 has 日 in it. Where the sun sits is what time it is.
间
间 is light coming through a crack. The old form 閒 sets 月 (the moon) inside 門 (a double door), and Xu Shen glossed it 隙也: a gap, a chink. Moonlight between two door leaves. From that gap the character stretched to mean the space between anything, and then a room, which is just a space walled off. 时间 is the same idea with no walls at all.
