The story behind the character
雪
雪 is 雨 (rain) on top with 彗 below to supply the sound. 彗 also happens to mean broom. Xu Shen called snow 凝雨, rain that froze solid, and then added 说物者, the thing that pleases the plants, because a blanket of it over the winter fields is good news for the harvest. Frozen rain, and the crops are glad.
