The story behind the character
真
Xu Shen's definition of 真 is one of the strangest in the book: 真, 仙人变形而登天也, an immortal changing form and rising into heaven. He read the pieces as 匕, change, 目, eye, 乚, to hide, and 八, the vehicle. The character for true began as a Daoist immortal. Later scholars mostly disagree.
