The story behind the character
让
让 is 言 (speech) with 襄 on the right for the sound. Xu Shen defined it as 让, 相责让也, "to reproach one another." Words, and pointed ones at that. So the character that now means to yield and to let started out as scolding. Two people argue, one finally gives ground, and the word slid over to the yielding.
