The story behind the character
也
The oracle bone 也 is a spouted vessel, the shape of a pouring jug, and it is the ancestor of 匜, a basin for washing hands. The classical particle 也 has nothing to do with jugs. It was borrowed for its sound, and once it took over the job in 我也是, nobody gave the jug its shape back.
