The story behind the character
远
远 is 辶, walking, with 元 giving the sound. The traditional 遠 used 袁 for the sound instead, and simplification swapped in the simpler 元. Either way the left side means going, and the whole character means the going takes a long time. Xu Shen wrote 远, 辽也, and 辽 means vast, stretching far out.
