The story behind the character
走
走 is 夭 (a person with arms swinging) over 止 (a foot). Xu Shen defined it as 走, 趋也, "to run." In old Chinese this character meant running, and 行 was the word for walking. The meaning slipped over the centuries, so now 走 is a stroll and 跑 is a run. The shape never changed. Only what it means did.
